Replacing a Bludomain splash page with WordPress splash page for better SEO and Search Marketing

January 11, 2011 by Marc 2 Comments

Recently Dapper Images a wedding and portrait photographer located in San Diego asked if and how I would enhance the search engine marketing and SEO with their current Bludomain website located at dapperimages.com and their separate WordPress blog located at dapperimagesblog.com?

new splash page Replacing a Bludomain splash page with WordPress splash page for better SEO and Search Marketing

Dapper Images New WordPress based Bludomain splash page

They wanted to retain a Bludomain type splash page appearance and the basic layout of their blog’s styling. They also wanted a WordPress site that would be easy to customize the styling design with just click and save options.

The Bludomain site was, and is, hosted by Bludomain.  The blog was hosted by a separate company on a Windows IIS server (please remember … friends don’t let friends host WordPress on Microsoft servers).

We discussed the tasks, options and prices and got the go ahead to begin the process.   The first step was to install WordPress on their Bludomain hosting and then begin to create a WordPress based splash page and move the blog postings/content to dapperimages.com  Then begin styling the major changes and minor design adjustments accordingly.

Below is a video review covering some of how the Bludomain splash page was replaced with a WordPress landing page for better site and blog integration and way better SEO and search marketing.  Even looks better!

How to Import Your Website Blog into Your Facebook Business Page

July 12, 2010 by Marc Leave a Comment
Tweet

UPDATE: Importing a blog into a Facebook business page is no longer supported by Facebook.  Please see this post for more details – You can no longer feed your blog to your Facebook page. To import a blog or other pages from your website you will need to create a custom tab for your Facebook busines page. More on how to do that soon.

 - – - – -

Here is the how-to for automatically importing your website’s blog posts onto your Facebook business page. It is not very complicated, but it is not very intuitive either so it made sense to share the instructions in a short video.

As I mention in the video it can take a while before Facebook recognizes your website blog, but be persistent it will work eventually and it is well worth it from both a social media marketing effort as well as enhanced search engine presence. If you have any questions send me an email.

New website for Midnight Magic Studios a growing wedding videography business.

July 11, 2010 by Marc 1 Comment

Don Samples of Midnight Magic Studios in Knoxville TN works hard and makes really great wedding videos.  He has been a long time client and I adapted the first Kertesz release for use as his website starting in 2008 using WordPress 2.5.

So it seems very unfair that his site was severely hacked recently.  I think Don would be the first to admit he should have kept WordPress system more up to date, but the automated site hijack hackers are just wrong.

midnight magic video new si 250x300 New website for Midnight Magic Studios a growing wedding videography business.

New Midnight Magic Studios website

After not being able to cure the site infection himself, Don contacted me in late June to see what could be done.  It was pretty bad, the database and PHP files were hosed, but WordPress was able to export a clean XML file we could use to rebuild the site pretty quickly.  So there were two paths, 1) restore the site using my old backup of the current theme or 2) take the opportunity to upgrade the  site to a newer more appealing theme layout offering all the new WordPress 3.0 features plus better SEO, improved security, easier one click total WP site system upgrades and social media integration with Twitter and Facebook. The second choice was only about two hours more time that the first even including some new site graphics.  Don chose the second option!

We picked a layout that was almost brand new and adapted well to videography. Then over the next two days I customized the layout, graphics, imported the old site’s content and setup a bunch of new features for both site visitors and search marketing.  Then like the Bionic Man, Don’s site was back even better, faster, stronger than before in just three days total. And for me the best of it all is Don likes it better, too.  Not to mention the improved site traffic and inquiries.  All for almost the same cost as just restoring the old site.

Please visit Don’s new site and see his work.  And if you have any questions about the potential advantages of a new WordPress based website system for your business please send me an email.

The Joy of a WordPress Based Website

January 18, 2010 by Marc 1 Comment

Facebook Share boxCount The Joy of a WordPress Based Website

example

One of my newer photography website clients (and a former Flash website owner) gets a lot business from Facebook. This morning he sent me an email with this link to the Facebook Developers Wiki asking if there was a way to automatically include the Facebook Share button on his website pages and posts. If you visit that link, it will give you a snippet of code that you manually place into each page/post, some instructions on where to place the code and it also tells you how to modify the code to change to the look of the Facebook Share box.

With WordPress there is an easier option than learning the code and manually placing the code in each page or post. There is a plugin that will do it automatically. All you need to do is install the Facebook Share WordPress plugin. The plugin is also documented in the Facebook Developers Wiki.

Part of the “joy” of a WordPress based website is the huge open source code community you become part of when you use WordPress. A community of people who are constantly creating new ways to enhance the basic WordPress code to make it one of the best website platforms available particularly for business marketing/networking. (Like the people who created and shared the Facebook Share plugin.) And it makes it especially easy for non-programmers to enhance their own website in almost any way wanted.

Unlike most Flash websites and other closed source platforms, you can make as many changes as you want to your website and not violate any copyrights. Yet, you can also use WordPress to even enhance most Flash websites and others.

If you have any question about enhancing WordPress, a WordPress website or adding WordPress to your current website send me an email.

Not all websites are created equal. There is a difference, the most important ones you can’t see.

December 15, 2009 by Marc Leave a Comment

Here is what I mean. Some websites are passive websites that require you to market them. They are search marketing inept and need Adwords and other paid promotion to receive visitors. My websites are dynamic sites with active search marketing and SEO features and are social network aware to continually present your goods and services across the internet, at no promotion expense. Just using the organic nature of the internet.

I feel the reason to have a website is not to just send someone a link to a digital business brochure, but to have an active sales tool taking advantage of the unique sales and marketing opportunities offered by today’s world wide web A good marketing and sales website can even ask for the order and process payment. One of my websites for your business becomes almost an additional staff member.working 24/7 for just the cost of hosting.

Every one of my website clients receive a custom dynamic website tailored to their business, mission, style and taste. This is pretty much the same with all website creators. x ray website vision Not all websites are created equal. There is a difference, the most important ones you cant see.But there a more fundamental difference hidden behind the scenes.

I believe my clients want to use the internet and their website to actively increase their business income. Some website do this well, other do not. It is in the way they are written. Fortunately there is a way to measure this difference. A third party tool called websitegrader.com. It provides a useful segmented report and a comparison based percentile score for any website you want to evaluate.

To explore the difference in search marketing potential between my websites and that of any other website developer you are considering I suggest that you run websitegrader reports on our respective home sites, the websites each of use to market our services. After all shouldn’t your websites creator’s site demonstrate strong SEO and marketing properties? That way you can feel more confident that the website you choose for your business will actually be good for your business.

This morning I did just that preparing for a meeting with a prospective client Long story short, there was a very large, measurable internet marketing difference between our website methodology … almost an order of magnitude. Their score a failing 7%, my score 98%+!.

Here is the report link for my site from this morning-

Report – http://websitegrader.com/site/www.marcfuller.com
It is above the 98th percentile compared to over 1.8 million websites

I work as a website craftsman, taking the time to learn your business and goals and then creating a website that uses the internet to present your business well and actively achieve your goals. If you would like to know more about what I might do for your business please send me an email.

Below is the Fan Box Widget for my new Facebook Page. Just exploring options as I am setting up the my business page on Facebook I am undecided as to the effectiveness of this option. On one hand it will drive traffic to your Facebook page on the other hand that may be traffic you wish would stay longer on your own website.

In any case if you want to use the Fan Box Widget on your WordPress website is is very easy. Here is some more detail on function and installation. After you get the Fan Box Widget script, it can be placed in a WordPress sidebar or page or post. Note – you will need to use the WP HTML edit view, the Visual view will break the script.

Let me know if you have any questions.

And please join me on my Facebook Page? Thanks!

The Pervasive Power of Today’s Social Media

August 24, 2009 by Marc 1 Comment
Tweet

Earlier I have written about how the desire for social connection helped launch the Internet and world wide web. Today Social Media like Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin are pervasive, powerful and respected. More importantly they are very wildly, ubiquitously used. They are the channel that will reach many of your prospective clients quickly, affordably and with a very high return on investment.

Here are some important bullet points and a video prepared by Erik Qualman, VP of Global Vice President of Online Marketing for EF Education, the worlds largest private educator covering the present reality and importance of Social Media.

  • By 2010, Gen Y will outnumber Baby Boomers — 96 percent of them have joined a social network.
  • One out of eight couples married in the U.S. last year met via social media.
  • Years to reach 50 millions users: Radio, 38 years; TV, 13 years; Internet, 4 years; iPod, 3 years. Facebook added 100 million users in less than nine months; iPhone applications hit 1 billion in nine months.
  • Eighty percent of companies use LinkedIn as their primary tool to find employees.
  • The fastest growing segment on Facebook is 55- to 65-year-old females.
  • Generation Y and Z consider e-mail passé. Boston College stopped distributing e-mail addresses to incoming freshmen in 2009.
  • YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world.
  • Twenty-five percent of search results for the world’s top 20 largest brands are links to user-generated content.
  • Seventy-eight percent of consumers trust peer recommendations.
  • Only 14 percent trust advertisements.
  • Only 18 percent of traditional TV campaigns generate a positive ROI.
  • More than 1.5 million pieces of content (Web links, news stories, blog posts, notes, photos, etc.) are shared on Facebook daily.
  • Successful companies in social media act more like Dale Carnegie and less like David Ogilvy — listening first, selling second.

Erik Qualman is also an important contributor to Search Engine Watch, here are two of his recent articles which provide much more information on the impact and importance of Social Media:  Social Media: Fad or Revolution? and 15 Social Media Maxims for Marketers. Check out both of them.  And keep on blogging and tweeting and networking!

Proof – Site structure is your best SEO investment

July 13, 2009 by Marc Leave a Comment

The best and most economical way for a small business to achieve high search engine results placement is to simply have a solid proven platform for their website.

We all know how important search engine results placement (SERP) can be to your website and sales.  Not only will  first page position increase your traffic and sales, it will also enhance your  credibility allowing you better profit margins.  It is simple,  High SERP = more sales, better profits.

Want proof that the website structure is the best SEO investment?  Well we now have proof!  We have the first 30 days results on the new site we just did for TWESA.

new site screencap1244731585 Proof Site structure is your best SEO investment

With TWESA we replaced their prior professional done website  (which also had 12 months of additional SEO consulting work billings)  with one of our websites designed using the WordPress open source platform.  More importantly we provided no SEO work, only a new website with a site structure demonstrated to have superior search engine results.  Long story short, the new TWESA site has increased its visitor traffic over 5 fold in just 30 days.  Additionally organic search referrals have increased almost 1000% and now account for over 50% of total traffic.

The new TWESA site cost very little more than just the SEO work they had had done over a year previous.  And which had little impact or lasting usefulness.

So the “take away” lessons are:

  • Search engines have gotten “smarter”. You are not going to get many results applying SEO to a website after the fact or its design.  Insist that your website developer demonstrate that your website will perform well providing excellent  search results out of the box.
  • And if you are considering using an SEO consultant, also consider just upgrading your site to a new platform. The results could be better than expected, long lasting and cost much less.

Measuring and Improving your Social Media Impact

July 1, 2009 by Marc Leave a Comment
Tweet

As Web 2.0 evolves to returns the internet to its social media roots, albeit with great advancements, interconnectedness and opportunity, it is useful to try to get an idea how well you are doing. After all, the first step towards improving is measurement.

Fortunately Google has a tool, wouldn’t you know it icon wink Measuring and Improving your Social Media Impact . Let’s begin reviewing what is called the Social Graph and how it tracks social media links. A Social Graph is a representation of internet based “relationships”. These relationships can be of any nature being presented through blogs and social networking websites presenting our information and presence. A social graph can then define your combined social networking “community” from the different social networking sites and blog you participate in. (This last part is why I am strong proponent of using a WordPress web/blogsite to act as a hub to help manage and improve the effectiveness of your Social Graph.)

Now to how Google can help. The Google Social Graph API makes information about the public connections between people more easily available Google engineer Brad Fitzpatrick gives an introduction to has an excellent short video over view explaining the workings of the Social Graph API.

Now lets use two simple forms provided by Google get some personal Social Graph measurements!

The first for site connectivity we will measure how your URLs for your websites and social network pages are connected. How many of your sites can be reached from each of your URLs?

And second, who are you connected to? The contacts you link to and the contacts that link to you.

Keep score, work to increase your social medial connections. It has been a constant for as long as we have had civilization … the more connections you have, the better opportunity you have for success.
