A couple of years ago BluDomain introduced a unique HTML blog offering that BluDomain named “Mini Blog”.  The BluDomain Mini Blog can stand alone or be part of one of BluDomain’s other templates.   Like WordPress the BluDomain Mini Blog produces HTML blog and posts and is driven by a MySQL database.  And that is pretty much the end of any substantive similarity between  BluDomain’s blog offering and a typical self-hosted WordPress blog.  They are entirely different in setup, administration and output.

Shortly after the release of BluDomain’s blog offering Mark Haynes did an excellent post describing its features and functionality.  Mark’s inclusion of screen captures together with step-by-step administration and post creation discussion provides a good insight into the BluDomain Mini Blog.  But his summation includes a potential caveat “If you’re running a word press blog and using all the features for solid SEO then this blog is a big step backwards.” So it is useful to add a comparison of BluDomain Mini blog and a standard WordPress blog features.

When Mark published his review WordPress was at version 2.8.4.  In the intervening 2+ years BluDomain’s Mini Blog has not been updated, yet WordPress has had five (5) major update revisions and is now up to version 3.3.  So let’s compare BluDomain Mini Blog to WordPress Blog with current versions.

For SEO and site visitor engagement the URLs of your pages and posts can make a big difference. Fortunately new code in WordPress 3.3 allows more freedom in setting the URL link for your content with no negative performance or response time impact for the choice you make.  Now your WordPress based site can have both user and search engine friendly permalink URLs with no penalty.

Prior to WordPress 3.3 setting the optimal URL for SEO and site visitors could cause your site to respond more slowly. This was as a result of a performance penalty related to “verbose rewrite rules” within WordPress which dictated increased database calls for URLs which included only the title or “postname”. Yet for visitor engagement and SEO slower site performance was often the result of an choosing SEO preferred option.

WordPress has a Settings option for what are called “permalinks“, meaning that the URL composition for the page or post can be modified or selected site wide. This is how WordPress describes the feature; “By default WordPress uses web URLs which have question marks and lots of numbers in them, however WordPress offers you the ability to create a custom URL structure for your permalinks and archives. This can improve the aesthetics, usability, and forward-compatibility of your links.”

Using a URL page/post descriptive keyword structure improves engagementfrom site visitors, who will be more inclined to visit descriptive URLs, and search engines which will be able to index and retrieve keywords from the URL when they match search terms.  This can help a lot with SEO and your site visitor conversion. Google and other search engines have made it so your permalinks are a basic part of a search engine user’s decision making process. The URL permalink appears as part of your search snippet on search result pages. Using redundant terms from categories in your permalink URL option could make your site appear spammy. While using a date in the permalink could make your content seem dated. Both cause unneeded length and useless terms in your URL. Fortunately those compromises are no longer needed.

WordPress permalink performance considerations are now resolved.

Up until WordPress 3.3, there was a quite serious performance issue when you have a lot of pages when you use just the postname, that is solved in WordPress 3.3. We can now use a simple permalink URL having only the domain and postname. This means shorter undated URLs with less redundant terms and more relative keyword content are possible with no performance issues. There are no more excuses to not use just the postname.

The danger of changing WordPress permalink URLs on an established site

Now before you change the permalink URLs of an existing site consider the potential search and SEO impact. Despite how easy it is to change permalinks in Admin, it is complex and can have a dramatic negative impact on your site if you’re not careful. After all you do not want to present a site with many multiple “404 page not found” results to your visitors. There are two steps in changing your WordPress permalink structure.

• The first is simple, go to Settings -> Permalinks and select “Post name”.
• The second step is to redirect your old permalinks to your new ones. To do that, you have to add redirects to your .htaccess file. Fortunately Joost de Valk has created an excellent webpage-based tool to address the potential negative impact from changing the permalink URL for sites which already have external links to content on other sites and in search engines. It automatically generates the redirect for you based on your domain and your old permalink structure which you can then include in your site’s .htaccess file.

If you make the change to your .htaccess file please test it by looking up your content on your site in a search engine and clicking through to that post/page on your site.

Many of BluDomain‘s Flash websites come with optional HTML versions that are supposed to help improve your BluDomain site’s SEO. Recently I had occasion to review the potential effectiveness of an optional BluDomain HTML version’s series of pages from an SEO perspective for a client. Before I get into the results let’s review what BluDomain explains and advises are the benefits of having the $50-$100 BluDomain HTML option.

A duplicate HTML version of your template. It automatically takes on all edits made within the administrative editing area of your flash site. The HTML site is also compatible with Apple’s iPad. The HTML site is highly beneficial for search engines, each word and image is searchable and as such your site will gain much more search engine exposure.

So how beneficial are BluDomain’s HTML template options for “search engine exposure”? First lets explore the SEO qualities of the BluDomain HTML versions.  This post began as a simple comment but with search engine marketing being so crucial to marketing success I decided to review all the BluDomain website templates offering an HTML option.  My procedure for doing this was to manually review the source code for the “About” page (or similar) of each template, checking the scoring elements of SEO Doctor‘s audit of the About page  together with using webconfs.com Search Engine Spider simulator to see the crawlable elements and indexable content of the About (or similar) page.

Summary of BluDomain Template HTML SEO findings

Surprisingly little additional SEO and “search engine exposure” is provided with the BluDomain HTML option.  Currently BluDomain offers ten (10) templates with HTML options. But my review revealed that:

• 40% of BluDomain’s available  HTML site options do not present any search engine indexable page content
• 60% of BluDomain’s available BluDomain HTML site options provide very SEO unfriendly URLs, while the remaining 40% could use improvement.
• 30% of BluDomain’s available BluDomain HTML site options do not have search engine crawable internal navigation/menu links
• None of BluDomain’s templates offer SEO valuable H1 and H2 tagged headlines,

From BluDomain’s HTML template demonstration examples provided on BluDomain’s website, the HTML template options are not well constructed for improved site SEO, providing little to no expected real-world improved search ranking results.

• The URL would be better if it did not include the “html/#!/”, moving the unique page file “about_me” name closer to the domain name.
• None of the page’s content is present in the About page source code. Confirmed by Search Engine Spider simulator.  The content is not indexable because it is not present in the page’s source code. Search engines need to “see” and read each individual page’s content in order to list pages in their indices. If your page content is not in the search engine’s index it is not able to be ranked and presented in search results.
• No provision for SEO invaluable H1 and H2 headlines, SEO Doctor confirmed.
• No internal crawlable links.  Confirmed by SEO Doctor and Spider Simulator.  The excerpt below from SEOmoz.com explains why crawlable internal links are important

… They (search engines) also need to have access to a crawlable link structure – structures that let spiders browse the pathways of a website – in order to find all of the pages on a website.

For the almost two years now Google has used site speed as a factor in your site’s search results position.

But most important is just this, install Smushit on your WordPress site.  It is easy with the WP Smushit Plugin from the free WordPress repository. WP Smushit should be part of every WP site that uses photos and images.  Using Yahoo’s service, it lossless-ly reduces the size of images files making your site load faster by;

• optimizing JPEG compression
• converting certain GIFs to indexed PNGs
• stripping the un-used colours from indexed images

It does this to both your existing images and new images you upload.  Making the file size of images smaller causes your site to load faster, improving visitor experience and potentially increasing your Google search ranking.

After you install the plugin, go to your media library and have it smush all the images already there, which, depending on how many you have, can take some time. After the initial smushing, it will perform the optimization for you automatically upon each upload.

Getting on the first page of search results is often the result of many small differences and improvements.  WP Smushit is an easy way to gain a helpful improvement.

Earlier this month Adobe announced in an email to developers that it was ending Flash Mobile.  Kevin Lynch, Adobe CTO, explained the strategy as follows:

We believe that HTML5 is a significant catalyst for growth for Adobe. And it’s a multi-year vector of innovation for most of our products. HTML5 is great for Adobe and great for the industry.

The key phrase I just used, and I people to make sure we all recognize this, is that most of our products – absolutely HTML5 is going to result in the substrate of the web undergoing a major overhaul – but it’s much bigger than just web pages. It’s the foundation of how content is going to be delivered in the years ahead.

Web, video, publishing, gaming are all going to increasingly rely on HTML5 across PCs, phones, TVs, and tablets. That is the foundation that we’re building toward and that’s the foundation we’re going to take a leadership position in.

A couple of days later Flash developer Mike Chambers expanded on the reasons for ending Flash Mobile and the future of Flash in general.  He noted that:

Finally, given the growth of HTML5 on both mobile and desktop browsers, we decided to more evenly balance our resources dedicate between Flash and HTML5.

Halting development on the Flash Player for mobile devices frees up resources for HTML5 development (tooling, frameworks, browsers).

So the future at Adobe calls for less Flash and more HTML5.    Contemplating Adobe’s increasing investment in HTML5 development tools and at the same time terminating Flash for mobile devices and what it means regarding Flash overall brings to mind the following quote from Winston Churchill; “Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.” Can it be that in a few months or a couple of years that as Flash Mobile went, so will Flash? To learn more regarding the problems and performance of flash on mobile devices read this analysis by GigaOm on why Flash Mobile did not work out.

Give it some thought when you make an investment in your website. With site visits by mobile devices quickly climbing towards 15% to 20% of the total site visits, according to IBM, it is a very important marketing consideration.  For your website and marketing it seems that “to Flash or not to Flash” is the question.  With Adobe putting its money on HTML5 for its future shouldn’t you?

It seems time to revisit some of the basic issues.  Do you remember April 2010 and Steve Jobs’ thoughts on Flash?  particularly concerning security, reliability and performance?

Symantec recently highlighted Flash for having one of the worst security records in 2009. We also know first hand that Flash is the number one reason Macs crash. We have been working with Adobe to fix these problems, but they have persisted for several years now. We don’t want to reduce the reliability and security of our iPhones, iPods and iPads by adding Flash.

In addition, Flash has not performed well on mobile devices. We have routinely asked Adobe to show us Flash performing well on a mobile device, any mobile device, for a few years now. We have never seen it. Adobe publicly said that Flash would ship on a smartphone in early 2009, then the second half of 2009, then the first half of 2010, and now they say the second half of 2010. We think it will eventually ship, but we’re glad we didn’t hold our breath. Who knows how it will perform?

In retrospect Steve Jobs had reasoned answers, before hardly any of us had even thought of the question.

Most SEO articles just deal with SEO and don’t focus on the real reason that should be driving any SEO effort .. your target customer.  All your SEO efforts should initially be directed by an understanding of your target market and its different customer search personas.  Then using that “ground work” to effectively attract the customers you want through well conceived SEO optimized content.

This is a great article “5 Steps to Building a Search Persona” by Erez Barak which works through how to develop a search persona that you can use for SEO efforts to increase your online sales.  The article provides excellent how-to steps and examples.  Put it in practice and it will help you increase traffic and sales.

Besides low SEO potential one of the issues with BluDomain splash pages is the lack of flexibility in adding new elements to increase your interaction with site visitors.

Every week I analyse  a few websites for people using BluDomain templates seeking ways to improve their site and  increase their SEO and search marketing.  When I do this I look up where the site is hosted and in whose name the domain is registered.  It is not uncommon for more than 40% of the domain names of the BluDomain sites I analyse to be held and registered in the name of BluDomain, rather than the  business owner who uses the domain.   You need to control and manage your domain, it is your business identity on the internet.  Having your domain name registered in another person’s name is problematic for a number of reasons:

1) Most importantly according to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) policy the person or company who is identified as the registrant is the person who owns the domain name. If there is a dispute or question as to the owner, the identified registrant receives preference.  If you are not sure if you are the registrant of your domain name you can look it up on a Whois, I like this one – http://www.whois.sc/.  For well over 17,000 domain names you will see information something like this:

Fortunately to transfer your domain from BluDomain as registrant to yourself as registrant is easy and very low-cost. There are two things you need to do to begin to change the registrant to your name:

• Send a support ticket to Bludomain asking for them to transfer the domain name to you.
• Determine where you want to have your name registered.  At this time I like GoDaddy’s domain name services (it is the company that BluDomain uses too).  GoDaddy is a good domain name registrar and low-cost too (but GoDaddy is not so good for most website hosting).  Wherever you decide to manage your domain you need an account to receive the domain name transfer and have it your name.  GoDaddy can start this with you over the phone at (408) 505 -8877
