Target your website’s SEO to your target customers

August 2, 2011 by Marc Leave a Comment

Most SEO articles just deal with SEO and don’t focus on the real reason that should be driving any SEO effort .. your target customer.  All your SEO efforts should initially be directed by an understanding of your target market and its different customer search personas.  Then using that “ground work” to effectively attract the customers you want through well conceived SEO optimized content.

This is a great article “5 Steps to Building a Search Persona” by Erez Barak which works through how to develop a search persona that you can use for SEO efforts to increase your online sales.  The article provides excellent how-to steps and examples.  Put it in practice and it will help you increase traffic and sales.

If you have any questions or want assistance leave a comment or send an email.  I am happy to help.

My Dad often said “what gets measured gets done”. And these five custom reports seem to “channel” that wisdom helping you understand your website traffic and set and meet goals. All particularly important if you are an online marketer or derive other revenue from your website.  And the standard Google Analytics reports often don’t provide some of the data detail you need.

I will be brief, just do the following now. Get the details, why these are most useful, how to use the reports and install the reports in your Google Analytics account by going to this Search Engine Watch article by Greg Habermann “My Top 5 Most Used Custom Reports in Google Analytics“.

These are excellent well crafted reports for analyzing your site traffic and making well-reasoned changes to your site to increase your results and meet your goal.

This is one of my favorite articles of this month and if you have any questions please send me an email or leave a comment.

Search optimizing a basic BluDomain Flash website How-To

July 26, 2011 by Marc Leave a Comment

This is a quick two part video tutorial review of how to setup the SEO elements of a BluDomain Flash site and splash page for the maximum SEO possible.  I work on many different standard BluDomain based websites weekly and it is unusual when all the SEO related elements are already completed and optimized as I show you below.  BluDomain does not have the robust possibilities of using WordPress for the splash page and blog, but you should take every opportunity presented to craft your site to present your search marketing keywords.

Part 1 – Maximizing the standard BluDomain splash page’s SEO

Part 2 – Maximizing the typical BluDomain Flash website template’s SEO

More on the death of meta keywords and why you should skip using them

If you have any questions, would like to know more about the additional SEO options included in using  WordPress or would like an SEO analysis and quote for enhancing the search marketing and SEO of your current BluDomain website … please send me an email or leave a comment below.

Replacement BluDomain SEO splash page now with WordPress widgets.

July 18, 2011 by Marc
Tweet

Besides low SEO potential one of the issues with BluDomain splash pages is the lack of flexibility in adding new elements to increase your interaction with site visitors.

One of our approaches to improving BluDomain SEO has been to replace the standard BluDomain splash page with a WordPress based splash page, but it did not have the easy capability to add extras like Facebook friends widgets.  Well, it does now!  We have added three easy to use widget areas across the footer of our BluDomain replacement splash page.  This means you can now add any WordPress widget to your splash page.  Flickr, Facebook, Google, Social media, Twitter Feeds … what ever you want.  It will increase site visitor interaction with your splash page and provide potential SEO enhancements.  Below is a video of how it works -

If you want to know more about improving the SEO and search marketing of your Bludomain site, feel free to leave a comment or send me an email.

Setting a custom Facebook username for your profile or business page

February 10, 2011 by Marc Leave a Comment

A custom Facebook username is an easy, free enhancement that may also benefit your search marketing.  A custom Facebook username allows you simplify the link to your Facebook profile or business page and you can then also include your service, product, business name or other useful keywords in the custom Facebook  URL.

Setting a Facebook username is simple but finding the link to the Facebook username page is not particularly easy.  The fastest way to get there is to first be logged into your Facebook account then just go to http://facebook.com/username.  To address some other useful details and nuance I have made a quick video that might help you become familiar with the different screens.

If you have any questions, send me an email or leave a comment.

Oceanic Ventures – New website provides increased local marketing and in-store traffic.

OVI screen cap jan 2011 330w 239x300 Oceanic Ventures New website provides increased local marketing and in store traffic.

Oceanic Ventures new WordPress based website

Recently I did a website for Eric Keibler owner of Oceanic Ventures, Inc. in Houston Texas.  Oceanic Ventures (OVI) is a full service scuba and diving shop with instruction classes.  OVI has been successfully established in Houston for over 20 years.  In this new era of marketing where search engines and the web have replaced most other forms of advertising as the prefered and low-cost way to gain business, Eric thought it might be time to replace the old static website OVI had since 2004.  I feel fortunate he found and selected me to help enhance his web presence for the new year.  Here is what he has to say about his new website and internet presence.

“I heard a podcast by Marc Fuller where he was talking about search engine optimization, SEO, and converting your site to one that helped bring business into the facility by increasing your visibility and on-line interaction .  I contacted Marc to see if there was a way he could help me.  My budget for overhead items like a website is small but I felt that I needed some help.  In about three weeks, Marc had our site built using data he gleaned from our previous website site and my personal blog site. He redesigned our site header, art and layout making it look much more attractive and up-to-date. At the same time he restyled added new features and optimized our Twitter and Facebook pages.  He cleaned up our Google Map/Places page, set up a Google calendar for our events and installed Google Analytics to help me learn more about the traffic we are seeing.   He also spent a lot of time optimizing our GoDaddy hosting for better speed, reliability and SEO, we even got a credit from GoDaddy. Marc then spent time with me coaching me on how the structure things to increase my search engine marketing visibility.

While we are still working on making the site even better, I have already seen an increase in traffic both on the site and more importantly in the store.  We have been in our same location for twenty years and people are coming in thinking we are new to the area.  It is very exciting.

One of the things Marc told me is that traditional sites with a lot of Adobe Flash and fancy “high end” features do not really drive business to you because they do not increase your position in the search engine which means business.  Or allow you to easily update your site and mange social media like Facebook.

As I said, I didn’t have a lot of money to spend; Marc works very efficiently and quickly using tools already developed and available on the web.  By doing this, he can keep the costs low — very low compared to what other web design professionals charge.  And with a high return on investment for my business.”

As you can read in Eric’s comment above, we did a lot of work to totally optimize his internet marketing effort for 2011.  Best of all though was the result, more customers in his store! If you have any questions, please send me an email.

Measuring the SEO of your site, your competitors’ sites and the people trying to sell you SEO services

January 30, 2011 by Marc Leave a Comment

There are a lot advantages to having a website with strong, positive, active SEO properties and structure. The search marketing opportunities from excellent SEO may dramatically increase your business income and significantly reduce expenses.

Many website owners will pursue trying to improve their site’s SEO but have little in the way of methods to measure progress or change.  Before you spend a lot of time and/or money on SEO it is very helpful to have “baselines” to measure your own site and how it “stacks-up” against your competition.  Also before you buy any SEO services I suggest measuring the site of the SEO company.  Doesn’t it seem reasonable that if they are selling the service shouldn’t their site(s) demonstrate some of their SEO ability?

measuring tape Measuring the SEO of your site, your competitors sites and the people trying to sell you SEO services

So how to measure a website’s SEO? There are a lot of tools, but there are two I use everyday.  These provide a quick snapshot  of  a site’s SEO potential and can be refreshed to show the results of any changes that you make.  This means you get an idea of your progress without having to wait possibly weeks for Google’s index to reflect your changes.

They are:

  • the Website Grader website and,
  • Vladimir Prelovac’s SEO Doctor add-on for Firefox (you will need to use Firefox)

Both of these tools will provide you a numeric percentage type score and some summary evaluations of important site structure, elements and assets.  It is important to understand that these tools cannot measure the outcome of your SEO efforts.  (After all you can have great SEO but have it poorly targeted to your potential market. ) But even if you have the best content it will likely fail in the search engine results against your competitors if your site does not score well.

And what is a good score?  Glad you asked.  In a competitive market I think you need to be above 95 (or work towards) in the SEO Doctor and above 90 in the Website Grader, for meaningful organic search marketing.  Because successful search marketing can provide such lucrative results to a business “winning” is now a matter of very small percentages.  The difference of 1-3 percent in either of these tools can mean your site will not appear high enough in organic SERPs to gain any visitors.  The race is not between sites that score 80% and 90% neither of them maybe winning, it is between the sites at 94% to 99%.  So if you want the benefits of organic search you can’t settle with being better than 80% of websites.  You need to be better than 95% percent of them.

Finally, just one note of caution in using the tools, don’t follow the tools blindly.  Sometimes there is a good reason to vary from their offered guidelines.  Just know your purpose in doing it.

As always, if you have a question send me an email.

Once I get the structure and functions of your complete website correct (valid HTML, semantically correct, permissions, sitemaps, indexable domains, blog and galleries together, social media integration, optimal URLs, site speed and much more) then it is all about your content. That is the key to strong online search engine marketing. That is what is important! But how to do it day-to-day after the site is built?

In the below video one of the most respected WordPress SEO gurus, Joost de Valk, explains “Making sure your content is found”. It is 40 minutes long and very well worth every moment of your time.

If you have any questions, feel free to email me.

kudos from dapper images wedding studio san diego Kudos from Dapper Images San Diego wedding photography studioWe are a wedding photography studio and are so pleased with the work that Marc has done for us!

We hired him to create a new WordPress based splash page layout for our Bludomain flash website so that it would be search engine friendly. And very easy to update/modify.

We also had him create a new blog layout for us that is under the same domain name as our website, so that when we post keyword rich blog posts with relevant tags, it would point back to our main website, and not just to our blog domain.

Now our website and blog are under the same domain and we are thrilled because we know this will make our website so much more visible to search engines. Marc was amazing to work with, great communication, we highly recommend him!
