Contrast of a wedding photographer’s website changing from Flash to WordPress

June 1, 2009 by Marc 2 Comments

This is just a simple comparison of a professional photographer client’s WordPress web/blog site that went live over the weekend, replacing their old Flash website.

Photographer – Lyrical Lens Photography

OLD SITE

  • The prior website platform was Flash, Big Black Bag, hosted on 1 and 1.
  • The cost of the site was $50 initial setup fee and then $200/annually
  • Website grader ending site search marketing score  – 20 (higher is better)

NEW SITE

  • New website platform, WordPress, premium professional photographer’s theme Kertesz self hosted on Bluehost
  • The cost of the site was a one time expense of $350 and then $7/monthly for hosting
  • Website grader initial site search marketing score  – 59 (higher is better)

Appearance of new site, I think Connie did a beautiful job -

The 4th Biggest Lie – “A Flash based website can SEO just as well as an HTML site”

May 29, 2009 by Marc Leave a Comment

No matter how many times you read it or how many times some Flash website sellers and some SEO service providers say it … IT JUST IS NOT TRUE! A Flash based website will NOT SEO as well an HTML site.

stupidity 276x300 The 4th Biggest Lie A Flash based website can SEO just as well as an HTML site

If it were true, don’t you think major internet marketers like Amazon or eBay would move more of their content into Flash? Or even better, why do almost all the SEO “experts” advise that a good way to increase your search presence and internet traffic is to get a separate non-Flash blog and link it to your Flash website. Great!, it really did nothing for your Flash website’s SEO and now you have two websites to maintain.

All just to try to get your Flash site recognized.

All things being the same, there in no Flash site that will SEO to the same level as a HTML site. The Flash website sellers can talk about their SEO techniques and give you a lot of fancy phrases (“deep linking”?) but even if they might help a Flash site, they would provide even better results on a HTML site. When the most successful Flash SEO technique is to create a parallel, but unseen, HTML site it … should be painfully obvious that HTML provides much better opportunity for higher search page placement. It is the HTML site that gets the search ranking. Be it Flash websites by Bludomain, Show-It, Big Black Bag and others the “features” of Flash combined with the weak (for search engines) structure relegate Flash based websites to less than ideal search engine placement.

Strong SEO and search page results placement mean more marketing visibility and lower advertising expense. Flash may have a very useful role in your website, but not as your website’s total platform.

Follow this advice and your website will respect you in the morning. icon wink The 4th Biggest Lie A Flash based website can SEO just as well as an HTML site

(ps – but if you still think that a Flash site will SEO as well as an HTML site … might you be interested in buying a bridge in Brooklyn?) icon cool The 4th Biggest Lie A Flash based website can SEO just as well as an HTML site

How Flash websites prevent “Word of Mouth” internet referrals

January 8, 2009 by Marc Leave a Comment

The marketing activity we all hope for; the free, powerful word of mouth referral to our website is severely hampered by Flash based website. The monolithic nature of Flash websites prevent anyone directing a contact into a specific part of your website. So they take a screen capture to show what they find interesting, or try to give some maze like instructions on how to find it in your website … or likely they just skip the whole thing and go on to a potential competitor. And you are left wanting for website referrals. You can’t buy word-of-mouth and with Flash you almost prevent them.

yo quiero website referrals 300x219 How Flash websites prevent Word of Mouth internet referrals

This is one marketing problem with Flash website I had not thought of before I came across this post at Webby Thoughts discussing the difficulty of emailing a link about Taco Bell’s Queso Crunchwrap with the Bell’s Flash website.

Now that may seem like it has little relevance to a wedding professional’s website, but imagine; a bride-to-be wanting to email a link to -

  • show her bride’s maids the dress she wants them to wear/buy
  • show her planner the floral decorations she wants to use
  • share the images that made her decide to chose you as her photographer
  • or worse, the link to your contract and payment options with her parents.

With Flash most of your content and details are buried in single monolithic site, it can’t be done. And as you build content it only becomes more difficult to share “word-of-mouth” referrals about what she found important about you. Put your content into a great platform like my WordPress based Kertesz web/blogsite and keep Flash for your galleries. So don’t just want referrals, GET them!

Think about it, can anyone name a successful internet marketer using a totally Flash based website … Bueller?

This is one of the most accurate and complete discussions of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) that I have read lately.

SEO Is Not Just For Wedding Photographers Anymore

Plus it mentions a number of helpful specific action points to improve most site’s search ranking.

(Although I do think he is a little optimistic on the likely possibility of flash sites being in the top ten for most markets using general search terms)

“Google kicked off my Bludomain site”

October 10, 2008 by Marc 8 Comments

Recently while exploring some discussion boards I came across a few threads like this one on Photo.net having to do with Google dropping Bludomain websites from their search results index. I came across similar threads on Flickr and the FM forum. Unfortunately the problem is not Bludomain’s, it can be any other similarly developed Flash site regardless of provider. The problem is based in the usage of Flash for an entire website.

A picture may be worth a 1,000 words, but not to a search engine. Google and other search engines only work with words. A Flash based site, like Bludomain, is basically just animated pictures. Take a look at the splash page “page source” of most Flash sites, even the most visually appealing. What you will commonly see, besides the page parameters, image calls and scripts, are the Meta tags related to title, description and keywords (a particularly useless tag) and a little text like “Skip intro”, “Website”, “Blog” (terms that very few brides-to-be will use in the wedding planning) and a note that Flash is needed to view the site. This lack of meaningful text content combined with scripts to launch your main site, which Google will not follow, is what leads to poor search ranking and being “kicked off Google”. I have written more in depth previously regarding the weakness of Flash sites’ search engine optimization.

Many photographers and other wedding professionals have discovered the internet marketing power of a blog, and added a blog to gain some internet recognition. A few, like Jessica Claire, have maximized that “blog power” for use as their entire website by creating a blogsite. And this is why I have spent the last few months developing a low priced blogsite for photographers and other wedding professionals (www.ProPhotoBlogsite.com) that can be easily managed by the site owner.

The important take away here is don’t be upset with Google or Bludomain or Flash, they are what they are are, don’t expect them to be different. By recognizing their nature and strengths it becomes easy to see how to use them combined with other options to dramatically improve internet results. As a New England sailor once told me, “don’t argue with the wind, just adjust your sail”.

META Keywords tag will not help a Flash website

August 8, 2008 by Marc 4 Comments

In fact it won’t help any website.

I recently had an email from a Flash website owner who said that his website designer assured him that the META Keywords tag would help overcome a Flash site’s search engine weakness. Sadly, no.

Despite some SEO hype types, in reality the META Keywords tag is DEAD. Yep, dead … and has been for half a decade.

keywordsmetatombstone1 META Keywords tag will not help a Flash website

Danny Sullivan founder of Search Engine Watch first shared that fact with us in Oct 2002. More recently, Jan 2008, the Editor of Technologyevangelist.com expanded on the Keyword tag’s death, why search engines quit using the Keywords tag to rank search results and related a perspective regarding a friend of his website. And there is even this item from the Search Engine Guide Blog on why the only beneficiary of using the Keyword tag could be your competition.

So use the Keywords tag it if you want. But don’t pay for it, don’t spend much time on it and realize that it serves much less functional purpose than your appendix.

UPDATE – 12-10-08

There is still people out there “selling” the keywords tag as a SEO tool. And the keywords tag is as dead as ever. Here is another report showing the reasons not to use the keywords tag … in video, by SEO specialist Dr. David Kyte.

Flash based websites: “the accessibility and searchability of a brick”

July 2, 2008 by Marc 1 Comment

Brick Flash based websites: the accessibility and searchability of a brickIn the quest to find methods to help improve marketing results for wedding professionals I often look at website options/techniques. Previously I have discussed the impressive advantages of using a rich featured blog engine as the basis for your entire website, but ignored the almost crippling impact Flash based websites can have on your Internet marketing.

Even today one of the most frequent website questions is “Flash or HTML?” The best answer lies in how you respond to this one simple question: Do you want your website to market your business (be a marketing partner), OR do you want the additional necessity of having to market your website?

I thought we had gotten past the time when people were fascinated with the wow factor of having a Flash Site and had woken up to the reality and amazing return on investment of internet marketing. Flash can be very pretty but if you want to get traffic to a Flash site you are going to have to advertise your site instead of your site advertising you. But a well crafted HTML site can leverage Google, and other search engines, to market for you. Without website traffic there are no sales.

This quote from SEO evangelist Tim Nash’s blog sums it up pretty clearly, “Adobe Flash (formally Macromedia) is a great tool for developing highly artistic multimedia applications;but  it has the accessibility and searchability of a brick. If you are serious about getting organic rankings the only advice is stay away from Flash, I mean it. Stop reading this post it will not help!”

Even though the large search engines like Google have some Flash indexing capabilities these are still very limited. The internet is and always has been a text based environment. That is just how search works. When the search spiders crawl your site they are looking for words and relevant content; to do that they have to be able to read the words. The text on a Flash based site is read as an image, not readable words. Since the spider doesn’t see any relevant content it just crawls off to another site and doesn’t bother to index your cool pretty Flash site. No indexing, no ranking in the search engines. What more, is they often see an entire Flash site as a single image. That means that even if you have 1000 images in your gallery of the most amazing whatever the search engines still see it as a single image.

I don’t care how your site looks, if no one finds it what are you getting for your marketing dollars? So the question remains do you want to spend your marketing dollars getting clients to your business or to your website? Traffic to your site shows off your work and your business and prompts clients to contact and hopefully hire you. The more good traffic you have the better chance you have of selling more. If your site, amazing though it may be, doesn’t show up high in the rankings of the major search engine you are going to have to drive people to your site through other marketing channels. That means increased print media buys and increased exposure at bridal shows to advertise your website just to get people to find it. Expect to spend well over a dollar a click through. It is not unusual for wedding photographers to spend $2.00 to $6.00 per click through. So here you have spent all this money on what your designer told you was a pretty website and you are now having to spend bucks just to get people to view it. Organic search is free, take advantage of the best marketing deal ever, organic search results. All you need to do is replace your Flash website.
