WordPress Fatal Error Allowed Memory Size Exhausted on Bludomain Hosting

If you have installed WordPress on your Bludomain hosting account and have a good sized, well featured blog you may sometimes be getting an error message like this “Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 122880 bytes) in /….”

This error is caused when WordPress “bumps up against” the hosting account’s PHP memory limit. This can happen when doing tasks like uploading a number of images or using the automatic update feature.

In almost every Bludomain hosting account I have worked with the limit is set at 32M. But as WordPress has grown and become more powerful over the last few years 32M is very often not enough. Particularly if you have a blog with a lot of posts and/or using plugins like NextGen Gallery. These days it is best to allow WordPress 48M or even better 64M of PHP memory.

In most hosting accounts the memory limit is set in a file in the root directory named php.ini. All you need to do is find a line that looks like “memory_limit = 32M” and change the number to what is needed. Unfortunately in Bludomain’s typical hosting it is not that easy, the php.ini file is not accessible. And I have not found an always successful alternative with Bludomain. Workarounds, like setting the memory limit in the .htaccess file does not often work. Neither does modifying the WordPress wp-config.php file. Bludomain seems to have set the memory limit firmly in place.

My recommendation is that if you are experiencing the memory exhausted fatal error send a support request to Bludomain requesting that the PHP memory limit for your hosting account be increased to 64M.

To see what your hosting memory limit is and how much of it your WordPress installation is using you can install and activate Alex Rabe’s handy plugin WP Memory Usage. WP Memory Usage will provide a graph with percentage usage as well as inform you of the PHP version in your WordPress dashboard. If you are showing over 85% memory usage you might as well send the support request into Bludomain soon. Once you get to 90% it is almost assured you will begin to experience the memory exhausted fatal error message from time to time. Let me know if you have any questions.

How to Import Your Website Blog into Your Facebook Business Page

Here is the how-to for automatically importing your website’s blog posts onto your Facebook business page. It is not very complicated, but it is not very intuitive either so it made sense to share the instructions in a short video.

As I mention in the video it can take a while before Facebook recognizes your website blog, but be persistent it will work eventually and it is well worth it from both a social media marketing effort as well as enhanced search engine presence. If you have any questions send me an email.

Upgrading to WordPress 3.0 on Bludomain hosting

WordPress recently released a major upgrade, WordPress 3.0 and many Bludomain website owners also use their website to self-host WordPress. Unfortunately upgrading to WordPress 3.0 on Bludomain hosting can sometimes present a frustrating problem, it freezes or you get an “memory size exhausted” error. The upgrade is important due to better security, speed and some great new features, but most Bludomain hosting accounts have a 32MB PHP memory resource limit which can prevent the upgrade. WordPress 3.0 has grown large enough with the new features and the new Twenty-Ten theme that it requires a larger PHP memory resource limit to upgrade. But once you can get it upgraded, WordPress 3.0 will make the needed adjustments.

Fortunately there is a plugin that you can install in your current WordPress site that will bump the memory resource sufficiently to overcome the limitation and allow you to upgrade to WP 3.0 simply. The plugin is called WP memory bump and it was created by the WordPress development team to deal with the issue.

So here is how you can upgrade to WordPress 3.0 with Bludomain hosting:

1) Backup your current WordPress files (the wp-content folder is all you need to copy) and backup your database. If you don’t have the WP DB backup plugin installed now is a good time to do it. It makes the database backup a cinch.

2) Deactivate all your plugins.

3) Upload, install and activate the WP memory bump plugin. It should be the only plugin that is active.

4) Proceed with the WordPress 3.0 automatic update.

5) When the WordPress 3.0 update is complete, proceed to update your plugins in their current deactivated status.

6) You can now begin to reactivate your plugins. Most widely used plugins now support WordPress 3.0, but if you make use of any relatively obscure plugins it might be best to activate them one at a time. That way if there is a problem, you will know which plugin to suspect.

7) Deactivate and delete the WP memory bump plugin. You will not need it again.

You should now have a completed fully up to date operational WordPress 3.0 site installation. But, feel free to send me an email if you have any questions or problems.

Three Websites Walk into a Bar… to meet a prospective client

The bar must have WiFi. Now stop me if you have heard this one before … but three websites each from different photographers (or any service or product that the prospect was searching for) meet a prospective client. Each may present only one page to try and make a sale.

One website shows the prospective client a photo and plays a song.

Another website shares with the prospective client her five most recent blog posts, all on different varied topics.

The last website presents the prospective client a targeted page explaining what they have to offer the prospective client, showing their work and why the prospect would be making a good decision to chose them.

Which website do you think made the sale? My vote also goes to the last one, the one presenting what they do and why they should be chosen. All in a comprehensive approach using text, graphics and media in an up to date, regularly updated and subscribable mode.

Because of the popularity of Flash based websites, a surprisingly high percentage of the competition takes the first approach. Out of frustration with Flash websites or poorly designed static websites many people are trying the second, making their blog the landing page. Experiencing more “meetings”, but not as many leads as they hoped.

And some are gaining a competitive advantage by utilizing the third website’s approach. A website based in WordPress, with a well crafted dynamic landing page designed to make an effective 30 second sales presentation to site visitors and search engine. While the rest of the site includes a traditional blog and attractive galleries together with all the rest that today’s website needs.

Now think about your website, which approach does yours take? Does your website give you the competitive advantage when it “meets” a prospect on line? And does it easily gain high search engine results at low cost?

There are many problem websites out there. Here is a website which just reviews and critiques websites with different problems, problemwebsites.com. Unfortunately some of these problem websites are fairly recent and look to have been expensive. Sadly, it is not uncommon. Some of the most popular photographers’ website templates from companies such as Bludomain, Photobiz, Showit Sites and others share the initial presentation limitations and search marketing problems of Flash.

A Client Shares – How Our WordPress Based Websites Actually Increased His Business

Don Samples of Midnight Magic Videography in Knoxville TN just sent me a note recounting his satisfaction and success from using our website. I really like that we were able to help his success, but before I share his experience I need to tell you a little about how we began.

Hey Marc,
I have been meaning to send this to you for a while now, but I have just been so busy. The web site you helped me with is working so wonderfully. I am getting about 10 to 15 hits a day on average. I have gotten calls and emails from brides who have told me that the information I have put on my site have helped them change their mind about choosing a videographer for their wedding. It also helped them ask the right questions of the videographer they have chosen.

But, most of all I have seen an increase in my business this year. Last year was a good year, but since the site is up and going, the late summer and fall are almost completely booked.

This site has changed my business from a struggling attempt at videography, to a respected, talked about, leading business in the East Tennessee area. Thanks so much for your help, my site is now what I have wanted it to be from the beginning. And, yes I have even updated my web site from my iPhone at a Starbucks.

Why a blog makes a poor web/blogsite main page and a how a splash page is even worse.

What is a top search result showing worth to your business

What is it worth to your company to show up in the top search results for your type of services or products? Shouldn’t that be the primary goal of your website? Shouldn’t your website market you, rather than you having to market your website?

Many of us make decisions about our website without first determining the primary goals for having a website. Instead we chose what seems pretty or something similar to our competition. I have nothing against pretty, but it is subjective and difficult to use for the evaluation of results. And I think it is very good to have better results than your competition, so don’t automatically do what they do either. Doesn’t it make sense that a primary goal should be improved marketing through high search results?

What do I mean by high search results? Just this, “high placement based upon likely generic search phrases“. For example, it is not significant to rank high on a search term like “love story wedding videography Miami” because really how many brides would be searching on a phrase that specific? Virtually none! What is important is a generic phrase like “Miami wedding videography”. That is an almost universal type phrase used by many South Florida brides seeking video services. And would result in a lot of website visitors for any videographer ranking high based on that phrase.

Let’s examine some of the other benefits of high search results, besides increased visitors. How about greater credibility, allowing for higher margins? Yes! Two recent studies have found that surprising outcome related to placing higher in search page results. First a report from iProspect revealing that “top rankings in search results transmit brand value to fully one-third of online consumers” and second this comprehensive study out of the University of Indiana titled “In Google We Trust: Users’ Decisions on Rank, Position, and Relevance” that had this finding

“An eye tracking experiment revealed that college student users have substantial trust in Google’s ability to rank results by their true relevance to the query. When the participants selected a link to follow from Google’s result pages, their decisions were strongly biased towards links higher in position … This demonstrated trust in Google has implications for the search engine’s tremendous potential influence on culture, society, and user traffic on the Web.”

So a wedding business that has a high search ranking with generic search terms can also have higher brand value making for higher income margins. Not only will high search rank provide more business, it helps support higher prices. Here is an example from an article titled “What is a #1 Google Ranking Worth?”.

Even better, how about an example from a successful wedding photographer? Many of us have heard of Houston wedding photographer Christine Tremoulet of Houston TX. Her photography is gorgeous. Christine has put the lesson of high search ranking to work by using the ideal of a WordPress based web/blogsite (with Flash limited only to portfolio galleries) that gets tremendous search rank and traffic. We can see this because she has also generously chosen to share her recent site activity through her site tracker. (Thankfully for the rest of us, true market leaders and innovators like Christine are almost always willing to share with the rest of the profession). If you take a look at the tracker you can see that her website regularly gets over 200 visits a day, with 50%+ coming from Google searches. Her largest single search term … “Houston”. Google “Houston wedding photographer” and she will almost always come up in the first page or two of results. And not because of costly Google Adwords, but free natural search. All this helps allow not only for a lot inquires, but also fees sufficient for a good income. That is the purpose of good marketing. Learn from leaders, she does not market her website, her website markets her.

So when trying to determine what to use for your website; if income is important to you, I recommend you chose what will get you the highest search results … a WordPress based web/blogsite.

Use your blog/website’s unique properties for search engine marketing
