You’re going to love WordPress 3.3′s new media uploader

December 9, 2011 by Marc Leave a Comment

WordPress 3.3 should be released in a very few days.  It is a great version and I reccomend upgrading to it.  I have been using the beta releases of WordPress 3.3 for a few weeks now and have found it almost trouble-free.  The attention to detail of the WordPress team is better than ever.

The best new feature is the HTML5 media uploader which allows multiple image uploading from almost any type of device; desktops, laptops, tablets (including iPads) and smartphones (including iPhones).

Here is what the WordPress team has to say about the new media uploader features:

File Type Detection

We’ve streamlined things! Instead of needing to click on a specific upload icon based on your file type, now there’s just one. Once your file is uploaded, the appropriate fields will be displayed for entering information based on the file type.

Drag-and-Drop Media Uploader

Adding photos or other files to posts and pages just got easier. Drag files from your desktop and drop them into the uploader. Add one file at a time, or many at once.

More File Formats

We’ve added the rar and 7z file formats to the list of allowed file types in the uploader.

In  my judgement what really makes it a major improvement for many of my clients, particularly photographers, is the Drag-and-Drop Media Uploader.  It is major improvement to WordPress making it easy and reliable to upload multiple images at a time and works in all types of devices, even iPads!  While it looks like some older uploaders that use Flash or Java the new WordPress uploader is a creation of HTML5.  Rather than try to describe how it works, let me show you.

play

This makes it even easier to add images to WordPress galleries than Flash sites like Bludomain.

An easy way to increase your WordPress site’s speed and potentially your site’s Google rank. Smushit for WP!

November 30, 2011 by Marc Leave a Comment
Tweet

For the almost two years now Google has used site speed as a factor in your site’s search results position.

If you want to know more about that here are some links:

  • An informational post from Matt Cutts explaining Google’s rationale for using site speed as a factor.
  • A detailed article from Google Webmastercentral on using site speed in search ranking.
  • More from Search Engine Land on site speed as a search ranking factor.

But most important is just this, install Smushit on your WordPress site.  It is easy with the WP Smushit Plugin from the free WordPress repository. WP Smushit should be part of every WP site that uses photos and images.  Using Yahoo’s service, it lossless-ly reduces the size of images files making your site load faster by;

  • optimizing JPEG compression
  • converting certain GIFs to indexed PNGs
  • stripping the un-used colours from indexed images

It does this to both your existing images and new images you upload.  Making the file size of images smaller causes your site to load faster, improving visitor experience and potentially increasing your Google search ranking.

After you install the plugin, go to your media library and have it smush all the images already there, which, depending on how many you have, can take some time. After the initial smushing, it will perform the optimization for you automatically upon each upload.

Getting on the first page of search results is often the result of many small differences and improvements.  WP Smushit is an easy way to gain a helpful improvement.

Fixing WordPress out of memory errors on Bludomain hosting

November 29, 2011 by Marc Leave a Comment
Tweet

Normally Bludomain hosting runs WordPress very well.  But the Bludomain hosting PHP memory resource limit, which is typically set to 32M, needs to be increased if your WordPress blog/site has many posts or it is using many plugins.

To see how much f the PHP memory resource is being used in your WordPress installation install the WP Memory plugin.  When activated it will provide an easy to understand scale in your WP Dashboard

If it shows more than 70% memory usage send a support request to Bludomain asking them to “Please increase the PHP memory resource limit for my hosting account from 32M to 256M”

Having Bludomain increase the PHP memory limit will usually resolve any exceed memory limit errors and prevent them in the future.  If they persist or you are having other issues with WordPress and Bludomain feel free to send me an email or call.

A great way to present and showcase videos with a lightbox effect in WordPress

November 25, 2011 by Marc Leave a Comment

There are many attractive options for easily showcasing images in WordPress, but often there is a need to showcase a video.  This is particularly true for videographers wanting to present their work in the most attractive format possible but is also needed for many other business.  Wether a Realtor showing a listing’s video walk-through or a wedding photographer’s photo montage or any other type of business or service, you need to be able to impress, focus and keep the viewer’s attention on the video to improve your sales. It is well recognized, video works for sharing your work, but most want to elevate our presentation above the ubiquitous YouTube player.

In the past, it has often not been easy to set up for video and there are not a lot of options.  But, after trying a number of plugins and options I have found an easy, reliable and low-cost method for presenting video in a lightbox type overlay giving it an almost theater type presentation.  Usable on both Vimeo and YouTube hosted videos, and it works for iPad and other non-flash enabled devices.

Below is an example of how a video displays in the lightbox using a video tour of luxury home listing -

play

Here is how you can set it up for your WordPress based website.

1) First you will need to install and activate the Floatbox Plus plugin from the WordPress plugin repository.

2) Next you need to download and install the Floatbox script.  Obtain the script here (you need to pay a $20 license fee after you get it setup).  To install the script you need to unzip it and then using your FTP client place the floatbox folder in the floatbox-plus folder so the path would look like this …wp-content/plugins/floatbox-plus/floatbox

3) Configure the Floatbox Plus plugin to your site and how you want the videos to display in the floatbox.

4) Insert your desired video into your page or post and save.

Here is a quick tutorial video covering some of the detailes for the steps above  (placedwith standard playback just to show how much better videos look in floatbox). -

If you have any questions or problems please give me a call or use the email form at the right.

Moving your WordPress website from Page.ly to your own hosting

July 19, 2011 by Marc Leave a Comment

Recently a new client asked if I could move his WordPress based Real Estate website from Page.ly to his own hosting at Hostgator.  He had initially chosen Page.ly because he was concerned that WordPress was too complicated for him to maintain or needed higher security management than he could manage.  As time went on he saw how easy WordPress is to maintain and keep upgraded with the built-in automated upgrades.  The immediacy and thoroughness of Automattic’s WordPress security team really impressed him too. Plus he realized that if he placed his site on his Hostgator hosting account he could save over 75% on his hosting charge.

pagely Moving your WordPress website from Page.ly to your own hostingThere is no doubt that Page.ly provides a solid secure WordPress hosting platform that some businesses want and require, but for many smaller self-managed WordPress sites it may be more than needed.

Whatever your situation, if you want … your site can easily migrate from Page.ly to a different host.  Here is how:

  • Although Page.ly does not provide a typical hosting panel with PHPMyAdmin or similar tool.  And WordPress database backup plugins seem to be a little unreliable on Page.ly.  Fourtunately Page.ly support is excellent and you can request a full backup of your database from Page.ly support which they will send to you.
  • Secondly although a FTP is not included with the standard Page.ly account, it can be had as a low-cost upgrade.  Simply upgrade to the FTP option and download the your site’s full wp-contents folder using a FTP client like Filezilla.

Now you have all you need to move your site to a different host server following these instructions Moving WordPress to a New Server

That is all you need.  If you have any questions please feel free to email me or leave a comment.

Replacement BluDomain SEO splash page now with WordPress widgets.

July 18, 2011 by Marc
Tweet

Besides low SEO potential one of the issues with BluDomain splash pages is the lack of flexibility in adding new elements to increase your interaction with site visitors.

One of our approaches to improving BluDomain SEO has been to replace the standard BluDomain splash page with a WordPress based splash page, but it did not have the easy capability to add extras like Facebook friends widgets.  Well, it does now!  We have added three easy to use widget areas across the footer of our BluDomain replacement splash page.  This means you can now add any WordPress widget to your splash page.  Flickr, Facebook, Google, Social media, Twitter Feeds … what ever you want.  It will increase site visitor interaction with your splash page and provide potential SEO enhancements.  Below is a video of how it works -

If you want to know more about improving the SEO and search marketing of your Bludomain site, feel free to leave a comment or send me an email.

Getting WordPress Pretty Permalinks to work on some newer Bludomain hosting accounts

March 20, 2011 by Marc 2 Comments
Tweet

This post is useful if you are trying to use WordPress’ Pretty Permalinks for the SEO benefit but are having “index.php” showup in the pretty permalink URL on your Bludomain host or other webservers identifying as “WebServerX”.  On a few Bludomain hosted sites with WordPress this is a significant problem.  The problem is created by the reported Bludomain server identity as WebServerX rather than Apache.  It is a masking technique used for security by hiding the true type of  web server (Apache) and/or to reduce the use of other software requiring Apache identified servers being loaded by website owners.  When you install WordPress with the default link structure everything will work fine. But when you want to change to pretty permalinks which are very useful for SEO and site visitors alike WordPress needs to create a new htaccess file.

In this situation WordPress looks for “Apache” but finds “WebServerX” so WordPress believes that “index.php” needs to be part of the pretty permalink. The reason for the problem is that since WordPress doesn’t think it’s running on Apache it doesn’t create/write to the needed .htaccess file.

There is a way to fix this and get the better “prettier” and better for SEO permalink structure. First check to make sure that the issue is because you are hosted on a host identified as WebServerX. An easy check is to go to http://whois.domaintools.com and enter your website’s URL. This will return the Whois Record for your domain. Click on the Server Stats tab. Then look for the line “Server Type: _________”. If your server type reads “WebServerX server” then you know the source of your pretty permalink problem and you can fix it in the next step.

Fortunately we can easily override the WebServerX masking manually.  All that is needed is to insert the code below into your theme’s functions.php file using the Appearance > Editor option in your WordPress admin panel.

global $is_apache;
$is_apache = true;

Basically this just bypasses the variable check and manually tells WordPress that it’s running on Apache so it will create the needed htaccess file to remove the index.php from the pretty permalink url.

Please note that this function will NOT work for WordPress sites running on Microsoft IIS web servers.

Feel free to send me an email or leave a comment if you have any questions.

Beware strangers offering Free WordPress themes

January 17, 2011 by Marc Leave a Comment
Tweet

Recently I had a client who had downloaded a free WordPress theme for their website.  It was not a good situation, but more on that later.  The site they downloaded it from was not the WordPress.org theme catalog.  It was just a site they found in Googling that offered free themes. The theme contained malware and spam links that caused the site to become blocked by protected browsers. It seems that free WordPress themes from sources other thanWordPress.org often contain malware.  A recent post by Siobhan Ambrose carefully reviews the first ten Google “free wordpress themes” search results and their themes for malware and other problems.  The take away lesson is that 90 percent out of the first ten sites were providing dodgy themes, with 8 sites (that’s 80%) having themes with actual malware.  The only search result without malware or other problems in free themes?  WordPress.org!

As Lorelle writes, free themes that come with malware have the ability to “integrate into your site, even down to the server level, through a twisting path of imaginative code. … This code has the ability to activate, create trouble, then erase its path, making it tough to detect, test, and eliminate.”

Why are WordPress.org free themes safe?  Because WordPress uses malware detection programs for the initial review.  Then if it passes that, but before a theme is presented  for download, it is carefully reviewed with the code inspected by hand by a team including leading website and WordPress security specialists.  If you want to learn more about WordPress malware, read this post titled Anatomy of a Theme Malware by Otto.

In the case of my client it even infected his other themes.  No part of his site was really left untouched.  It took over 10 hours (it is a very large site) of time to find, scrub and restore his site.  Just from simply downloading and installing a free theme from a source other than WordPress.org.  So if you want a new blog/site look, I suggest you contact a good WordPress site creator (like me).  We often can point you to a free theme that is “clean”, or even provide it for you.  Or is you want something that is unique we can often redesign your blog/site theme in less time than it would take to “disinfect”.  It is also why I offer my clients free built-in automatic usability and security upgrades that assure their blog/site will always work with the latest, most powerful and secure versions of WordPress.
