The end of Flash? It is for Flash Mobile on smartphones and tablets.

November 28, 2011 by Marc Leave a Comment

Earlier this month Adobe announced in an email to developers that it was ending Flash Mobile.  Kevin Lynch, Adobe CTO, explained the strategy as follows:

We believe that HTML5 is a significant catalyst for growth for Adobe. And it’s a multi-year vector of innovation for most of our products. HTML5 is great for Adobe and great for the industry.

The key phrase I just used, and I people to make sure we all recognize this, is that most of our products – absolutely HTML5 is going to result in the substrate of the web undergoing a major overhaul – but it’s much bigger than just web pages. It’s the foundation of how content is going to be delivered in the years ahead.

Web, video, publishing, gaming are all going to increasingly rely on HTML5 across PCs, phones, TVs, and tablets. That is the foundation that we’re building toward and that’s the foundation we’re going to take a leadership position in.

A couple of days later Flash developer Mike Chambers expanded on the reasons for ending Flash Mobile and the future of Flash in general.  He noted that:

Finally, given the growth of HTML5 on both mobile and desktop browsers, we decided to more evenly balance our resources dedicate between Flash and HTML5.

Halting development on the Flash Player for mobile devices frees up resources for HTML5 development (tooling, frameworks, browsers).

So the future at Adobe calls for less Flash and more HTML5.  the end of flash mobile 300x300 The end of Flash? It is for Flash Mobile on smartphones and tablets.  Contemplating Adobe’s increasing investment in HTML5 development tools and at the same time terminating Flash for mobile devices and what it means regarding Flash overall brings to mind the following quote from Winston Churchill; “Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.” Can it be that in a few months or a couple of years that as Flash Mobile went, so will Flash? To learn more regarding the problems and performance of flash on mobile devices read this analysis by GigaOm on why Flash Mobile did not work out.

Give it some thought when you make an investment in your website. With site visits by mobile devices quickly climbing towards 15% to 20% of the total site visits, according to IBM, it is a very important marketing consideration.  For your website and marketing it seems that “to Flash or not to Flash” is the question.  With Adobe putting its money on HTML5 for its future shouldn’t you?

It seems time to revisit some of the basic issues.  Do you remember April 2010 and Steve Jobs’ thoughts on Flash?  particularly concerning security, reliability and performance?

Symantec recently highlighted Flash for having one of the worst security records in 2009. We also know first hand that Flash is the number one reason Macs crash. We have been working with Adobe to fix these problems, but they have persisted for several years now. We don’t want to reduce the reliability and security of our iPhones, iPods and iPads by adding Flash.

In addition, Flash has not performed well on mobile devices. We have routinely asked Adobe to show us Flash performing well on a mobile device, any mobile device, for a few years now. We have never seen it. Adobe publicly said that Flash would ship on a smartphone in early 2009, then the second half of 2009, then the first half of 2010, and now they say the second half of 2010. We think it will eventually ship, but we’re glad we didn’t hold our breath. Who knows how it will perform?

In retrospect Steve Jobs had reasoned answers, before hardly any of us had even thought of the question.

Search optimizing a basic BluDomain Flash website How-To

July 26, 2011 by Marc Leave a Comment

This is a quick two part video tutorial review of how to setup the SEO elements of a BluDomain Flash site and splash page for the maximum SEO possible.  I work on many different standard BluDomain based websites weekly and it is unusual when all the SEO related elements are already completed and optimized as I show you below.  BluDomain does not have the robust possibilities of using WordPress for the splash page and blog, but you should take every opportunity presented to craft your site to present your search marketing keywords.

Part 1 – Maximizing the standard BluDomain splash page’s SEO

Part 2 – Maximizing the typical BluDomain Flash website template’s SEO

More on the death of meta keywords and why you should skip using them

If you have any questions, would like to know more about the additional SEO options included in using  WordPress or would like an SEO analysis and quote for enhancing the search marketing and SEO of your current BluDomain website … please send me an email or leave a comment below.

Our Bludomain SEO package provides a 300% plus increase in website traffic for Jen Carver Photography

July 21, 2011 by Marc Leave a Comment

A few months ago Jen Carver, an amazing children’s photographer from Pittsburgh, engaged us to do provide the full restructure and SEO for her website.  There were only two restrictions, we needed to keep the Bludomain core and a splash page similar to the typical Bludomain splash page. As you can see the splash page appears much like a Bludomain splash page, but it is all WordPress, with all the possible WordPress SEO juice, and is fully part of her WordPress custom blog and related pages.

With Jen’s help in design we were able to put together a smashing site that has almost perfect SEO attributes, and is easy to use and modify.  And best of all it has great organic search results for her keywords. jen carver photography wordpress splash page Our Bludomain SEO package provides a 300% plus increase in website traffic for Jen Carver Photography

In general we created the new splash page with a special template WordPress page and we were able to easily include sufficient content, links and attributes to work much better than the possibilities using the standard Bludomain splash page.  From there we designed and styled the blog and other pages with templates that best suited their respective purposes.

Additionally we imported Jen’s existing blogs from WrodPress.com and Blogger. Configured needed 301 redirects.  Copied her contact information and such from the Bludomain site where it is difficult for search engines and mobile devices to access.  Polished all the content for greater use of her search marketing keywords.  And integrated her Facebook business page and Twitter account into the WordPress functions.

In the future Jen can easily modify the blog and other pages using the point and click design settings which allow her to change the style and appearance of almost every element of the site with just a mouse click or two.  We also provided hosting for her new site, both the BluDomain and WordPress with OptimalHosting so that the site would be faster and more reliable.

But what really counts is the results, right.  Since April when the new site first went live, the number of visits per day has now climbed to well over a 300% increase in less than 90 days..  For more read Jen’s recent comments on the new site and our work.

If you would like to know if we can do the same for you, please leave a comment or send an email.

Replacement BluDomain SEO splash page now with WordPress widgets.

July 18, 2011 by Marc
Tweet

Besides low SEO potential one of the issues with BluDomain splash pages is the lack of flexibility in adding new elements to increase your interaction with site visitors.

One of our approaches to improving BluDomain SEO has been to replace the standard BluDomain splash page with a WordPress based splash page, but it did not have the easy capability to add extras like Facebook friends widgets.  Well, it does now!  We have added three easy to use widget areas across the footer of our BluDomain replacement splash page.  This means you can now add any WordPress widget to your splash page.  Flickr, Facebook, Google, Social media, Twitter Feeds … what ever you want.  It will increase site visitor interaction with your splash page and provide potential SEO enhancements.  Below is a video of how it works -

If you want to know more about improving the SEO and search marketing of your Bludomain site, feel free to leave a comment or send me an email.

BluDomain owns over 17,000 domain names. Why yours should not be one of them.

July 18, 2011 by Marc Leave a Comment
Tweet

Every week I analyse  a few websites for people using BluDomain templates seeking ways to improve their site and  increase their SEO and search marketing.  When I do this I look up where the site is hosted and in whose name the domain is registered.  It is not uncommon for more than 40% of the domain names of the BluDomain sites I analyse to be held and registered in the name of BluDomain, rather than the  business owner who uses the domain.  your domain name 300x225 BluDomain owns over 17,000 domain names. Why yours should not be one of them. You need to control and manage your domain, it is your business identity on the internet.  Having your domain name registered in another person’s name is problematic for a number of reasons:

1) Most importantly according to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) policy the person or company who is identified as the registrant is the person who owns the domain name. If there is a dispute or question as to the owner, the identified registrant receives preference.  If you are not sure if you are the registrant of your domain name you can look it up on a Whois, I like this one – http://www.whois.sc/.  For well over 17,000 domain names you will see information something like this:

Registrant:
BluDomain
17919 E. Dorado Drive
Centennial, Colorado 80015
United States

2) By being the registrant you get to make decisions such as; which registrar to use for your domain, how you want to be billed for your registration fees, if you want to extend your registration term to over five years for SEO purposes, other services such as privacy and even shop for ease or use and savings.

Fortunately to transfer your domain from BluDomain as registrant to yourself as registrant is easy and very low-cost. There are two things you need to do to begin to change the registrant to your name:

  • Send a support ticket to Bludomain asking for them to transfer the domain name to you.
  • Determine where you want to have your name registered.  At this time I like GoDaddy’s domain name services (it is the company that BluDomain uses too).  GoDaddy is a good domain name registrar and low-cost too (but GoDaddy is not so good for most website hosting).  Wherever you decide to manage your domain you need an account to receive the domain name transfer and have it your name.  GoDaddy can start this with you over the phone at (408) 505 -8877

That is all you need, but if you have any questions or would like me to analyse your Bludomain for ways to improve its SEO feel free to send an email or leave a comment.

Getting WordPress Pretty Permalinks to work on some newer Bludomain hosting accounts

March 20, 2011 by Marc 2 Comments
Tweet

This post is useful if you are trying to use WordPress’ Pretty Permalinks for the SEO benefit but are having “index.php” showup in the pretty permalink URL on your Bludomain host or other webservers identifying as “WebServerX”.  On a few Bludomain hosted sites with WordPress this is a significant problem.  The problem is created by the reported Bludomain server identity as WebServerX rather than Apache.  It is a masking technique used for security by hiding the true type of  web server (Apache) and/or to reduce the use of other software requiring Apache identified servers being loaded by website owners.  When you install WordPress with the default link structure everything will work fine. But when you want to change to pretty permalinks which are very useful for SEO and site visitors alike WordPress needs to create a new htaccess file.

In this situation WordPress looks for “Apache” but finds “WebServerX” so WordPress believes that “index.php” needs to be part of the pretty permalink. The reason for the problem is that since WordPress doesn’t think it’s running on Apache it doesn’t create/write to the needed .htaccess file.

There is a way to fix this and get the better “prettier” and better for SEO permalink structure. First check to make sure that the issue is because you are hosted on a host identified as WebServerX. An easy check is to go to http://whois.domaintools.com and enter your website’s URL. This will return the Whois Record for your domain. Click on the Server Stats tab. Then look for the line “Server Type: _________”. If your server type reads “WebServerX server” then you know the source of your pretty permalink problem and you can fix it in the next step.

Fortunately we can easily override the WebServerX masking manually.  All that is needed is to insert the code below into your theme’s functions.php file using the Appearance > Editor option in your WordPress admin panel.

global $is_apache;
$is_apache = true;

Basically this just bypasses the variable check and manually tells WordPress that it’s running on Apache so it will create the needed htaccess file to remove the index.php from the pretty permalink url.

Please note that this function will NOT work for WordPress sites running on Microsoft IIS web servers.

Feel free to send me an email or leave a comment if you have any questions.

Replacing a Bludomain splash page with WordPress splash page for better SEO and Search Marketing

January 11, 2011 by Marc 2 Comments

Recently Dapper Images a wedding and portrait photographer located in San Diego asked if and how I would enhance the search engine marketing and SEO with their current Bludomain website located at dapperimages.com and their separate WordPress blog located at dapperimagesblog.com?

new splash page Replacing a Bludomain splash page with WordPress splash page for better SEO and Search Marketing

Dapper Images New WordPress based Bludomain splash page

They wanted to retain a Bludomain type splash page appearance and the basic layout of their blog’s styling. They also wanted a WordPress site that would be easy to customize the styling design with just click and save options.

The Bludomain site was, and is, hosted by Bludomain.  The blog was hosted by a separate company on a Windows IIS server (please remember … friends don’t let friends host WordPress on Microsoft servers).

We discussed the tasks, options and prices and got the go ahead to begin the process.   The first step was to install WordPress on their Bludomain hosting and then begin to create a WordPress based splash page and move the blog postings/content to dapperimages.com  Then begin styling the major changes and minor design adjustments accordingly.

Below is a video review covering some of how the Bludomain splash page was replaced with a WordPress landing page for better site and blog integration and way better SEO and search marketing.  Even looks better!

Prepare your Bludomain hosting for the new 2011 WordPress version 3.2 requirements

January 11, 2011 by Marc Leave a Comment
Tweet

I work with Bludomain websites and hosting on a daily basis and one of the recurring limitations of most Bludomin hosting accounts has been the issue of exhausting allowed memory resources, there will soon be another frequent issue.  That issue is that many Bludomain hosting accounts still use an aged version of PHP, PHP version 4.7, and/or MySQL version 4 that in the next few months will no longer meet the minimum requirements needed to run WordPress.

Last summer WordPress announced that self-hosted WordPress from version 3.2 forward will require PHP version 5.2 and higher.  Here are the details and formal PHP 4, MySQL 4 end-of-life announcement from WordPress.org

With this in mind when you order a Bludomain website and have it hosted by Bludomain and may wish to use WordPress with your hosting, specify that you want the hosting account to have this requirements for WordPress:

  • PHP 5.2 or higher
  • MySQL 5.0.15 or higher, and
  • 64M or more for the PHP memory resource limit.

If you already have Bludomain hosting with WordPress you might want to send Bludomain a support request asking about these minimum requirements for your current hosting account.

WordPress 3.1 will be released in days with 3.2 coming in about just 6 months. Make sure that your WordPress can still be upgraded when the time comes.

WordPress Fatal Error Allowed Memory Size Exhausted on Bludomain Hosting

January 6, 2011 by Marc Leave a Comment
Tweet

If you have installed WordPress on your Bludomain hosting account and have a good sized, well featured blog you may sometimes be getting an error message like this “Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 122880 bytes) in /….”

This error is caused when WordPress “bumps up against” the hosting account’s PHP memory limit.  This can happen when doing tasks like uploading a number of images or using the automatic update feature.

In almost every Bludomain hosting account I have worked with the limit is set at 32M.  But as WordPress has grown and become more powerful over the last few years 32M is very often not enough.  Particularly if you have a blog with a lot of posts and/or using plugins like NextGen Gallery.  These days it is best to allow WordPress 48M or even better 64M of PHP memory.

In most hosting accounts the memory limit is set in a file in the root directory named php.ini.  All you need to do is find a line that looks like “memory_limit = 32M” and change the number to what is needed.  Unfortunately in Bludomain’s typical hosting it is not that easy, the php.ini file is not accessible.  And I have not found an always successful alternative with Bludomain. Workarounds, like setting the memory limit in the .htaccess file does not often work. Neither does modifying the WordPress wp-config.php file. Bludomain seems to have set the memory limit firmly in place.

My recommendation is that if you are experiencing the memory exhausted fatal error send a support request to Bludomain requesting that the PHP memory limit for your hosting account be increased to 64M.

To see what your hosting memory limit is and how much of it your WordPress installation  is using you can install and activate Alex Rabe’s handy plugin WP Memory Usage.  WP Memory Usage will provide a graph with percentage usage as well as inform you of the PHP version in your WordPress dashboard.   If you are showing over 85% memory usage you might as well send the support request into Bludomain soon.  Once you get to 90% it is almost assured you will begin to experience the memory exhausted fatal error message from time to time.  Let me know if you have any questions.
