I'm not really an active professional wedding photographer but I have to say that this is probably right, based on what I'm hearing and what I've personally seen. Every client and potential client I've talked to in the last year has been on a tight budget and they want something not so extravagant yet definitely something unique. I hear terms like "artsy photos" and "photo-journalistic style", etc. They don't want the formals, they don't want to come in, they just want me to show up and do my thing which they get a feel for from some of my various portfolio locations (portfolio website, flickr, event photo locations, facebook, etc.)
