Recently I had a message from a wedding professional in Oregon mentioning that weddings and revenue combined were down about 15% in her area and asking if wedding business was down in my area, too.
My observation is that weddings are about the same in number, but that it seems like what is changing is that expense and extravagance now seem to be out, with value and creativity being the “new black”.
Anyone have any comments or observations from their view?
If this is a changing trend, now is time to be in-front with sales messages on your website and direct marketing materials that meet this idea without discounting or changing your cultivated brand.

I’m not really an active professional wedding photographer but I have to say that this is probably right, based on what I’m hearing and what I’ve personally seen. Every client and potential client I’ve talked to in the last year has been on a tight budget and they want something not so extravagant yet definitely something unique. I hear terms like “artsy photos” and “photo-journalistic style”, etc. They don’t want the formals, they don’t want to come in, they just want me to show up and do my thing which they get a feel for from some of my various portfolio locations (portfolio website, flickr, event photo locations, facebook, etc.)
